If a Brady BMP21-PLUS, BMP21-LAB or M210 says “Insert Labels,” first confirm the cartridge is firmly seated and the locking lever is engaged in its vertical position. Brady lists incorrect media and battery power among the checks for this message.
Keep the full printer model with the cartridge reference. A pre-sized label intended for M210/M211 is not a valid substitute in BMP21-PLUS.
Work through the documented checks
Check battery power. Brady advises replacing AA batteries or charging the rechargeable pack; its support article links separate instructions for charging a BMP21-PLUS pack outside the printer.
Inspect the contact area for obvious damage or missing pins. Brady identifies five pins on BMP21-PLUS/BMP21-LAB and two on M210. Do not bend pins or alter the cartridge to bypass recognition.
Check that the cartridge smart cell is present and secure, and use Brady Authentic supplies as required by the manufacturer.
Rule out an unsupported label format
Brady’s M21 guide marks pre-sized cartridges and B-581 repositionable entries as M210/M211 only. A shared M21 prefix does not remove that exception.
The older BMP21 without PLUS also has a documented restriction for the quarter-inch vinyl introduced with the PLUS generation. Do not drop PLUS when identifying the device.
When to stop
If correct media, seating and adequate power do not resolve the message, use Brady support with the printer model and exact cartridge number. Visible damaged contacts also need support rather than repeated cartridge swaps.
This guide follows Brady’s Insert Labels article. Other messages, such as Invalid Cartridge, can have separate model-specific instructions.
