For a LabelWriter 550, 550 Turbo or 5XL, verify the roll is DYMO Authentic and was manufactured after April 2020. DYMO states both conditions in its North America compatibility chart.

An older roll can share a printed item number and dimensions with a current supply. Those details alone do not establish compatibility with the recognition system.

Check the roll before changing software

Read the complete printer model. Then compare the exact roll reference with the model’s chart and confirm the supply’s Authentic and manufacturing-date requirements.

If the pack does not establish the date requirement, ask the supplier or DYMO to identify the supply. Do not assume that an old unopened pack is compatible simply because it is genuine.

Do not substitute another media system

D1 and LetraTag LT are cassette systems. They are not alternatives to a LabelWriter roll, even if a product listing calls all of them “DYMO labels.”

A 4 × 6-inch shipping roll is listed for the 5XL, but the 550 list omits those extra-large items. Compatibility still depends on the exact model after the Authentic and date checks.

If the correct roll is still rejected

Use the model-specific DYMO support instructions with the printer model, roll reference and pack details. This chart establishes supply compatibility; it does not diagnose every sensor, loading or software fault.

Do not modify a roll or transfer identification components from another supply. A successful bypass would not establish the manufacturer-supported fit.
