Identify the printer’s technology before ordering labels. A direct-thermal printer prints on heat-sensitive media without a transfer ribbon. A thermal-transfer printer needs compatible labels and its specified ribbon system.
The Zebra ZD421 family includes direct-thermal, thermal-transfer ribbon-roll and ribbon-cartridge configurations. “For ZD421” alone does not tell you which supplies to order.
Match the hardware configuration
Read the full hardware part number and use its manual or support listing to establish the configuration. A ribbon cartridge and a loose ribbon roll are different supply formats.
For thermal transfer, Zebra says the ribbon must cover the full width of the media and its liner. A narrow ribbon can leave part of the printhead exposed to the media.
Dimensions still matter
After choosing the technology, check media width including the liner, roll outside diameter and core inside diameter. Optional adapters can change the accepted core sizes; they are not assumed to be installed.
Zebra lists a 127 mm maximum roll outside diameter for the ZD421/ZD621 family. Standard cores are 12.7 or 25.4 mm inside diameter; larger cores require the specified adapter.
Media width is not print width
Media width includes the backing liner. Printable width describes the area the printhead can mark. A roll can fit in the holder while a label layout is still too wide.
Confirm the selected label size and printer configuration in the software after installing the correct media. Software settings cannot make an incompatible roll or ribbon fit.
