A ZD421 family name is not enough to choose a label roll and ribbon. Identify whether the printer is direct thermal, thermal transfer with ribbon rolls, or the thermal-transfer ribbon-cartridge configuration.

Zebra lists different maximum media widths for those configurations. That measurement includes the liner and must not be confused with the printable width.

Compare the limits for your configuration

The current ZD421/ZD621 media documentation lists the following ZD421 limits. Confirm the full hardware part number before applying a row.

Check roll and core dimensions

The maximum roll outside diameter is 127 mm. The standard core choices are 12.7 and 25.4 mm inside diameter. Zebra lists 38.1, 50.8 and 76.2 mm cores with optional roll adapters.

A roll that fits the holder can still be unsuitable for the sensor, media thickness, label length or fitted peel/cutter option. Use the relevant option requirements as well as the basic roll dimensions.

Match the ribbon to the media

For thermal transfer, the ribbon must cover the complete width of the media and liner. Check ribbon format, length and width for the installed configuration.

Do not cut through adhesive labels with the standard cutter: Zebra describes that option for liner, tag and receipt media. Its linerless cutter is a different configuration.
